PTFE Rod is a high performance engineering plastic with many advanced properties to suit modern day high specification applications.
PTFE Rod Applications
PTFE Rod is ofren used in high specification pumps or valves because PTFE can flow or mould itself to an oposing componant giving an excellent long lasting seal. PTFE Rod is also used within the food industry to produce bushes and rollers etc. as it has FDA approval and is safe with direct food contact. Another area where PTFE Rod is effective is in the high electrical environments as it has very high electrical insulation and is often used where resistance exceeds other materials such as PVC. Another area where PTFE Rod has proved popular is the cryogenic industry, this is because it is one of the few materials that can withstand such low temperatures. PTFE Rod is also used within bearings, PTFE helps because it has a very low friction value which helps reduce any internal bearing friction. Also, PTFE Rod is often used for heat resistance product handles, this is because it can withstand high temperatures and also reduces the amount of heat that is conducted from mating parts.
Properties for PTFE Rod
PTFE Rod has an incredibly low co-efficient of friction, considered one of the lowest on record. PTFE is also an advantage for extremes of temperature as it can withstand a maximum of 250°C and also -250°C. It can resist these extremes of temperature without losing to much of its other properties. PTFE Rod is also an excellent electrical insulator and much higher than other simular plastics. Further advantages of PTFE Rod are its chemical resistance, it can resist many different chemicals and acids much better than most other plastics.
Availabilty of PTFE Rod
Extruded PTFE Rod is available in sizes ranging from 4mm diameter up to a maximum diameter of 120mm, this extruded PTFE Rod is manufactured by forcing the polymer through dies to produce a product that is normally 2000mm long. Moulded PTFE Rod is available in sizes ranging from 56mm diameter up to a maximum of 500mm diameter. The largest sizes of moulded PTFE Rod are produced in shorter lengths due to manufacturing constraints and weight due to the moulding process.
Other Grades
PTFE Rod is also made including a 25% glass composition, this helps with rigidity, hardness and reduced expansion rates. Carbon filled PTFE Rod is also available which helps with improved heat disipation and where bearing surfaces may become hot.
